Red Gerard – the Olympic Winter Games’ first millennial gold medallist

The millennial moment

Red Gerard has landed a first Olympic gold for the millennials.

Gerard conjured a spectacular final run to seize the snowboard slopestyle title and so become the first Olympic Winter Games champion born in the 2000s.

It was also a first gold medal at PyeongChang 2018 for Team USA.

The 17-year-old was in 10th and last place after the first two rounds of the final, but he came good at the right time with a near-perfect run capped by a flawless backside triple cork 1440.

Who is Red Gerard?

Redmond ‘Red’ Gerard was born just west of Cleveland, Ohio near the banks of Lake Erie on 29th June 2000.

The teenager comes from a large family, with four brothers and two sisters.

His older sister Tieghan is also making a name for herself -as a food blogger (with Red also making appearances in the kitchen).

He was taught to snowboard by his older brothers and, from the age of seven, spent winters in Silverthorne, Colorado where he practised tricks on a couple of rails set up in their backyard.

Four years later, the family made the move permanent and their backyard was soon transformed into a full-blown rail park where the youngster honed his skills.

Gerard made his World Cup debut as a 15-year-old in August 2016, and secured his first victory a year ago at Mammoth Mountain, California.

Final round drama

Sochi 2014 bronze medallist Mark McMorris led going into the final round with the Canadian on the verge of completing a miraculous comeback from a collision with a tree last March which left him in intensive care.

But McMorris was overtaken by Gerard before Max Parrot snatched silver from his team-mate with the last run of the competition.

Parrot’s late heroics pushed Norway’s Sochi runner-up Staale Sandbech out of the medals, with the top four now looking ahead to the first Olympic men’s big air competition starting on February 21st.

All eyes will be now be on Gerard and to see whether he can come up with another unexpected moment of millennial glory.
